Music Monday

October 25, 2010

MN is a wonderful place to be a musicphile.

First, we have great public radio stations like MPR’s The Current and super college radio (I listen to SCSU’s KVSC). Secondly, we’ve got top performance venues (First Avenue, Ordway, Orpheum, Varsity Theater, Pantages Theater, Fine Line Music Cafe, The Turf Club-just to name a few) which attract fantastic performers.

Meanwhile, the greatest musical treasures are the ones we’ve home grown. Most folks know Prince and the great Bob Dylan are from Minnesota, but how many other bands have you listened to from the great Hotdish state?

I know that there are many, many more for me to discover, but today I’m focusing on ten of my favorite local musicians.

Here they are, in no particular order.

Happy Monday!

Dessa

Solid Gold

Har Mar Superstar

Brother Ali

Tapes n Tapes

Atmosphere

Mason Jennings

The Hold Steady

The Soviettes

Total Babe and they really are “babes,” I can’t believe they are so young!

High School Musical Monday

September 27, 2010

I can’t believe it’s been a week since I posted here.

Time flies when you’re having fun…

Today, I will be working with high school film students, helping them navigate Final Cut Pro.  Final Cut, is the program I use daily to edit event videos.

So, I thought I would take a trip down memory lane with the music this week.

These are seven albums I know I owned and played over and over during my teenage angst ridden years.  Anyone out there in BlogLand feel nostalgic about the following?

Musical Monday-Sad Songs

September 20, 2010

Tragedy has hit at Digital Art House, as a pack of coyotes killed eight of our nine free ranging hens.

So, on this gray misty morning I’m feeling a bit low.

I truly never thought I’d ever feel this way about a chicken. A chicken!

I know, I know, I used to think they were the silliest, most stupid, most ridiculous creatures. I mean, something that runs around after its head is cut off?

A punchline to the joke-”Why did the chicken cross the road?”

Living with hens, made me realize they are really smart, complex creatures. Hens are funny and personable. You can’t help smiling when you spend time just watching them “be chickens.”

I had no idea….

So, yeah, I might cry over my lost flock today and listen to some sad songs.

Here are seven musicians in my collection with soundtracks for blue days.

Sufjan Stevens
Jeff Buckley
Bon Iver
Joni Mitchell’s albums Both Sides Now & Blue in particular.
Beth Orton
The Temper Trap
Elliot Smith

And if you truly want to wallow in self pity, you can always listen to Chris Isaak.

Hopefully this will be fun for you blog followers, and the links will introduce you to some new artists, with tunes you may want to incorporate into your personal “soundtrack.”

Without further adieu, here are this week’s top seven musical groups I think you should check out, if you have not already done so.
