Ewe Spin Me Right Round Baby

February 23, 2010

Feeling sheepish? Ewe betcha!

Sorry, I just can’t help the puns.

That beautiful girl above is Dreamer, she is a Shetland Sheep belonging to Nancy Krohn.  Nancy has a great blog, which Dreamer narrates, that I’ve been “cyber stalking” called A Shepherd’s Voice.

Well, my dad and Jayne have recently relocated to a farm in south eastern MN. A few weeks ago they totally hooked me up, arranging a visit/tour of Nancy’s home. This is what Nancy had keeping warm and happy out of the cold MN winter.  I couldn’t believe the awesome set up she had!

Spoiled poultry….

After meeting some of Nancy’s fine feathered friends, to read more about them check out her chicken blog, we headed out to meet this shepherd’s flock.

Nancy gave us animal crackers to give the sheep as a friendly bribe.  I did have to wonder, if they ate a sheep shaped cookie would they be considered cannibals?

In exchange for lots of cookies, Dazzle the darling gave me kisses.

Sage thinks the sheep kind of look like aliens, and I have to agree they are pretty crazy looking. It’s those eyes…

Of course we couldn’t leave without purchasing some fleece for me to spin.

Pretty amazing that sheep’s wool can go from this:

I’ve already spun most of it, and tonight Violet helped me dye the white fleece with Kool-Aid.  I thought it would be fitting for her to help me dye the fleece most likely taken from her favorite white sheep, Angel. So the fleece went from this:

to this:

I plan on taking this brightly colored roving and my spinning wheel into Violet’s kindergarten class to show them how sheep’s wool can be dyed and spun into yarn.

Big shout outs to Jayne and Nancy for setting this awesome day up for us.  Violet and I, the big animal lovers, will definitely be back for a visit this spring to see the, oh I can hardly contain myself, LAMBS!!!

Meanwhile, here’s a joke I overheard in the pasture.

“Where do sheep go to get their hair cut?”

“The baa baa shop.”

“Baa ha ha!”
